Message When the speaker cone moves forward, a wave of increased pressure is generated at the front, but a wave of decreased pressure is generated on the rear side of the cone.

If there is no baffle, there will be a short-circuit path around the edge of the cone from front to back (Fig. 1.3a). When this path is less than a quarter wavelength, the radiation efficiency drops off rapidly.

This may indeed why he's getting poor speaker response

Thus the baffle (Fig. 1.3b) must be large enough to eliminate paths shorter than a quarter wavelength at the lowest desired frequency.

The area within the speaker rim and baffle hole must be airtight
